El círculo fundamentalThe fundamental circularity

Introducción · cap. 1Introduction · ch. 1

Whoever studies the mind does so with a mind. This book starts there and does not hide it.

The science of mind cannot look from outside: it is inside the circle it studies.

Francisco Varela (Santiago, Chile, 1946 – Paris, 2001) came from biology: with Humberto Maturana he had formulated autopoiesis. Evan Thompson was a young philosopher. Eleanor Rosch, a psychologist at Berkeley, had shown that we classify the world by prototypes cut to the body's measure. Varela and Rosch practiced Buddhist meditation.

In 1991 they publish The Embodied Mind: the cognitive sciences need a dialogue with human experience examined with discipline. And they propose a word, enactive: cognition does not represent a pregiven world from a pregiven mind; world and mind arise together from a history of actions.

Following Merleau-Ponty: we awaken in a world we did not design. We find it, and yet it is our own structure that lets us reflect upon it. The world seems to be there before we begin to think, but it is not separate from us. Neither a disembodied eye looking from outside nor a mind inventing it from within.

Capas sin fondoLayers without bottom

Neuroscience assigns a brain structure to each behavior. But that description is also produced by our cognitive structure, against a biological, social and cultural background. And positing that background is something we do, living bodies thinking. Like an Escher drawing, it never ends. The authors propose going back to concrete experience.

Like Janus, cognitive science looks down two roads: one face sees cognition as behavior in nature, the other sees it as experience in the life-world. If the circle is ignored, one falls into one of two extremes: experience is an illusion that a mature science will replace, or there can be no science of experience because science always presupposes it.

Tres escenasThree scenes

The example is the book's own. Almost all of us hold as a deep truth that matter is a swarm of particles, and we treat what we live as less true. But when we relax in the sun, or run anxiously to catch a bus, that account fades into the background and becomes abstract. Which of the two is the ground of the other?

A neuroscientist looks at a brain image and points to “attention”. She looks at it with her attention, and the word “attention” comes from her own experience: had she never attended to anything, she would not know what to look for in the scan. The third-person description rests on a first person that is almost never named.

¿Entiende la máquina?Does the machine understand?

In 1991 the authors noted that technology hands society an unprecedented mirror of itself: for the first time ordinary people ask whether mind is symbol manipulation or whether a machine can understand language. Thirty-five years later, with conversational artificial intelligence, that question no longer belongs to specialists: it is dinner-table talk.

Ventana a MorinWindow onto Morin

Five years earlier, Morin had posed the same circle: all knowledge of the mind is produced by a mind, which is the activity of a brain, which lives inside a culture. He did not want to break the circle by seeking an ultimate foundation, but to make it productive: a loop in which each term sheds light on the others. Morin had been reading Maturana and Varela since the seventies.

The difference lies in the emphasis. Morin proposes a method of thought for inhabiting the loop. Varela, Thompson and Rosch add a practice: a way of training attention that makes the circle visible in one's own experience, not only in reasoning.

La citaThe quote
“
Experience and scientific understanding are like two legs without which we cannot walk.
Varela, Thompson y Rosch · The Embodied Mind, cap. 1, p. 14Varela, Thompson & Rosch · The Embodied Mind, ch. 1, p. 14

It closes the first chapter. Just before, the authors warn that denying the truth of our own experience in the scientific study of ourselves leaves that study without a subject matter; and that supposing science contributes nothing to experience is to abandon the task of self-understanding.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

¿Cómo se valida una experiencia? How do you validate an experience?

Experience happens in the first person. The book promises a method to cross that border, and its critics ask how a meditator's reports can be checked without falling back into the old introspection that failed early in the twentieth century.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

The book founded the enactive current. Today people speak of 4E cognition: embodied, embedded, enactive and extended. In 1987 Varela had cofounded the Mind and Life Institute, which still brings neuroscientists and meditators together, and contemplative neuroscience grew out of that line.
