El yo en la tormentaThe I of the storm

Cap. 4Ch. 4

Science looked for the self in the brain and did not find it. Meditation looked for it in experience and neither did it.

We feel a firm center from which we look at the world. When we look for it, no one is home.

Hume y el tablero de backgammonHume and the backgammon board

David Hume wrote in 1739 that whenever he entered most intimately into what he called “myself”, he always stumbled on some particular perception: heat or cold, love or hatred. He never caught himself without a perception. And, as the authors tell it, he went off to play backgammon: he split life from reflection.

For the authors, every reflective tradition has challenged the naive sense of self. But almost all dodge the contradiction: they ignore it or posit a transcendent self that is never experienced. The only one that faces it squarely, they say, arose from the practice of mindfulness.

Lo que buscamosWhat we look for

The Tibetan teacher Tsultrim Gyamtso makes it precise: for it to matter so much, that self would have to be lasting, single and independent. We act as if it were; that is why a splinter or a noisy neighbor sets us off. The meditator does not speculate whether it exists: they watch how the mind clings to “I” and “mine”, and look for it.

Cinco montonesFive heaps

The Abhidharma divides experience into five aggregates (skandha, “heap”): form, feeling, perception with its impulse, dispositional formations and consciousnesses. The Buddha is said to have explained them with piles of grain. One goes through them one by one: is this my self? None shows anything lasting, single and independent.

Lleno de experiencia, vacío de yoFull of experience, empty of self

Only a truly existing self was missing. And that is exactly why experience can flow: a fixed self behind the aggregates would halt all arising and passing. What there is, is grasping, which is why they are called the “aggregates of clinging”.

The body's cells are constantly renewed. What do today's have in common with those of seven years from now? That they make up “my” body: the argument goes round in a circle. And we can imagine a whole-body transplant and still feel the same. The self does not seem to be the body.

The first thing someone looking for the self discovers is not its absence but total egomania. What threatens the self arouses anger; what enlarges it, greed; what is irrelevant to it, like waiting for a bus, boredom. These are the three poisons: desire, aversion and ignorance, at work in every perception.

Una vela enciende otraOne candle lights another

The image is traditional: one candle lights the next, and that one another, and the flame passes without anything material passing. That is how moments of consciousness are linked, by cause and effect. We take that succession for a real continuity and defend it as if it were someone.

Two lights switched on less than 50 ms apart look simultaneous; more than 100 apart, successive; in between, they seem to move. Varela and his team triggered the lights by the phase of each subject's alpha rhythm. With the same interval, starting at one peak they looked simultaneous and at the other, moving.

The brain seems to bundle what happens into “nows” of about 100 to 150 ms. The authors do not offer this as proof of Buddhism, which would be scientific imperialism, but as a consonance: the momentariness the meditator observes has an echo in neurophysiology.

La citaThe quote
“
Entramos en el ojo mismo de la tormenta de la experiencia; simplemente no pudimos discernir allí ningún yo, ningún «yo».We entered the very eye of the storm of experience, we just simply could discern there no self, no “I.”
Varela, Thompson y Rosch · The Embodied Mind, cap. 4, p. 79Varela, Thompson & Rosch · The Embodied Mind, ch. 4, p. 79

This is the source of the chapter's pun, The I of the Storm, which sounds like the eye of the storm. The sentence closes the search through the five aggregates: experience was not missing, the owner was.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Cognitive science showed that the mind needs no fixed self, but it offers nothing for dealing with the self we all cling to. Citing Merleau-Ponty, the authors say science prefers manipulating things to living among them, and so the scientist stays safe from their own discoveries.

In 2011 Judson Brewer's group observed less activity in it in experienced meditators. And philosophers like Thomas Metzinger argue that no one has ever been or had a self.
