EmergenciaEmergence
Cap. 5Ch. 5
Many simple parts, none intelligent, none in charge: from their connection arises something that recognizes.
There is no conductor in the brain. There is a conversation in which everyone speaks at once.
Already at the Macy conferences it was argued that a real brain has no rules, no central processor, no data at precise addresses: it has massive connections that change with experience. In 1958 Frank Rosenblatt built the Perceptron, which learned to recognize simply by modifying its connections.
Those ideas slept for twenty-five years under what Dennett jokingly called “High Church Computationalism”. They returned in the late seventies, with nonlinear physics and fast computers. And the scale was inverted: the hard thing is not imitating the expert but the baby who learns to speak.
One starts from many simple, densely connected components. Each attends only to its immediate surroundings and nobody turns the axle from outside. Even so, a global cooperation appears when all reach a mutually satisfactory state. Cybernetics called it self-organization; today, emergent properties.
Aprender es reconectarLearning is rewiring
Donald Hebb proposed in 1949 that if two neurons fire together, their connection is strengthened. So the network becomes inseparable from its history. After learning, it recognizes a pattern even if it arrives noisy or part of the network is damaged. Another route is backpropagation: adjusting connections to imitate an instructor.
Here there are no symbols: meaning lies in the global state of the network. The authors propose a relation of inclusion: symbols are approximate high-level descriptions. As in genetics: a DNA triplet “codes” for an amino acid only within the cell's metabolic network.
Each cell looks only at its two neighbors. Row after row, with no plan and no boss, shapes appear that nobody drew.
El tálamo escucha al cerebroThe thalamus listens to the brain
In the visual pathway, 80% of what a cell in the lateral geniculate nucleus receives comes not from the retina but from other brain regions, and more fibers run down from the cortex than up to it. Seeing is not a relay chain running from the eye inward.
Dormido o despiertoAsleep or awake
If the reticular system is stimulated, the animal goes from waking to sleep. But that system is not the “controller” of sleep: it is necessary, not sufficient. It makes possible a coherence that does not belong to it. As the authors put it, it is the animal that sleeps, not the reticular neurons.
The authors suggest there are non-neural networks with cognitive properties, such as the immune system, which Varela studied as a network that tells self from non-self without a center. If that is cognition, symbolic calculation would be only a narrow, specialized way of knowing.

Morin made emergence a central piece of his theory of organization: new qualities that appear at the level of the whole, cannot be deduced from the parts and act back upon them. And he added a nuance: the whole is more than the sum of its parts, but also less, because organization inhibits qualities of the parts.
Varela, Thompson and Rosch use emergence for a precise question: how there can be coherence without a self at the center. Morin uses it to think all organization, from atom to society. The two readings meet in the idea of self-organization.
No es magiaIt is not magic
There is no unified formal theory of emergence, but it shows up everywhere: vortices and lasers, chemical oscillations, genetic networks, ecology. The authors say it is hard for any densely connected aggregate to escape it.
No borra los símbolosIt does not erase symbols
The proposal is to include them: symbols work as a high-level description, but they are approximate and depend on the network that sustains them and on its history. What is questioned is a purely procedural cognition, cut off from the body.

Connectionism still measures success by the match between an internal state and a task defined from outside. It changes the mechanism but keeps the idea of representing a given world. That idea is what enaction will call into question.
Thus the behavior of the whole system resembles a cocktail party conversation much more than a chain of command.Varela, Thompson y Rosch · The Embodied Mind, cap. 5, p. 96Varela, Thompson & Rosch · The Embodied Mind, ch. 5, p. 96
It closes the description of the visual pathway: the signal from the eye meets more activity coming down from the cortex, the reticular formation and the centers that move the eyes. Recognizing an object would be the emergence of a global state among resonating neuronal ensembles.

¿Y el lenguaje?And language?
Fodor and Pylyshyn replied in 1988 that a network may do for perception, but language and inference are recursive and systematic and demand an exact symbolic level. The authors grant the argument has weight but say it reduces cognition to its highest forms.

The backpropagation the book describes with NetTalk, a network that learned to read aloud, is the basis of today's deep learning. Networks now produce fluent language, the ground that seemed reserved for symbols. Whether they understand is still debated.
