Mentes sin yoSelfless minds
Cap. 6Ch. 6
Without a self, what gives a life coherence? A society of agents and a wheel of habits.
The self is not what turns the wheel: it is the track the wheel leaves as it turns.
Minsky y la rueda de la vidaMinsky and the wheel of life
Marvin Minsky and Seymour Papert proposed seeing the mind as a society: agents with minimal skills forming agencies. “Builder”, which stacks block towers, is nothing but the joint action of Begin, Add, Finish, Find and Pick up. Minsky opens six pages of his book with quotations from the Buddha.
The authors find the parallel in the Abhidharma: codependent arising, a circular chain of twelve links that explains how habits form and persist without a self. Karma, there, is not fate: it is psychological causality, the way habits form over time.
What is an agent at one scale is, at another, an agency made of agents. The mind is neither a homogeneous unit nor a collection of things but a heterogeneous network of processes. Minsky concludes there is no Self, yet we are “virtually forced” to go on believing in it.
Doce eslabonesTwelve links
Ignorance, volitional action, consciousness, the psychophysical complex, six senses, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, becoming, birth, decay and death. Each link depends on the others and habit emerges from the cycle, as an agency does from its agents. It applies to an instant or a whole life.
Donde se puede cortarWhere it can be cut
Up to feeling, everything happens automatically. Between craving and grasping, someone mindful can interrupt the chain; according to some traditions, that is where the Buddha formulated mindfulness. Freedom is not doing whatever the ego wants: that is the most conditioned thing there is.
A wheel of twelve links. Sometimes the impulse goes all the way round; sometimes attention halts it between craving and grasping.
La mano y los dedosThe hand and the fingers
The Tibetan teacher Geshe Rabten compares each moment of mind to a hand, and its mental factors to the fingers and palm. The hand does not exist without the fingers, nor are the fingers what they are without the hand: they are different levels of one emergence, like Minsky's agencies and agents.
Some schools ask meditators to go very slowly, to notice the intention that precedes even a trivial gesture, like shifting when something is uncomfortable. Normally we act so fast that we do not see intention. Seeing it is the most direct way to cut the chain at craving.
For Melanie Klein or Fairbairn the mind is a cast of internalized figures, much like Minsky's agents. But therapy aims for the patient to function better, not to ask: if I am only a set of schemas, why do I pursue my comfort so zealously?
Edgar Morin · La noción de sujeto · 1994Edgar Morin · The notion of subject · 1994
Ser sujeto es ponerse en el centro del propio mundo para computar, conocer y actuar: nadie puede decir «yo» por mí.Morin reaches a neighboring conclusion by another path: the subject is not a hidden substance but an operation that emerges from the self-organization of the living. Being a subject is putting oneself at the center of one's own world in order to compute, know and act: no one can say “I” for me.
Leídos juntos, se corrigen: sujeto sí, ego fijo no.But Morin does not want to dissolve the subject: he defends it against the sciences that eliminate it, and adds a principle of inclusion that brings others into a “we”. The book, by contrast, dismantles clinging to the self. Read together, they correct each other: subject yes, fixed ego no.
Karma no es destinoKarma is not fate
In popular usage, karma means predestination. In Buddhism it is the opposite: a description of how habits form and continue, with a practical aim, which is to understand that causality in order to break the chain.
Soltar no es apagarseLetting go is not shutting down
People fear that without craving and grasping, desire will vanish and they will be numb. According to the authors it is the reverse: the mindless mind is the numb one, wrapped in a cocoon of thoughts and prejudgments. It is about being more present in the world, not less.
No es nihilismoIt is not nihilism
Nihilism, with Nietzsche, is knowing our highest values are untenable and being unable to let them go. That is Minsky's and Jackendoff's dead end. The contemplative tradition offers a fourth alternative: neither forcing oneself to believe in the self nor denying it with resignation.
Real freedom comes not from the decisions of an ego-self's “will” but from action without any Self whatsoever.Varela, Thompson y Rosch · The Embodied Mind, cap. 6, p. 129Varela, Thompson & Rosch · The Embodied Mind, ch. 6, p. 129
It answers the ending of The Society of Mind, where Minsky admits that free will has no place in the physical world and that, even so, we are “virtually forced” to keep that belief though we know it is false.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
¿Quién responde por lo que hice?Who answers for what I did?
The book explains continuity without an owner: intention leaves traces, as a species persists without being a substance. But ethics, law and shared life ask for someone to answer. How responsibility holds without a self is a question the book takes up at the end and does not fully close.

Sociedades de agentesSocieties of agents
Artificial intelligence is again being built literally as a society: systems of specialized agents coordinating with one another. And in psychotherapy, approaches such as Richard Schwartz's “internal family systems” treat the mind as a set of parts in dialogue.
¿Puedes ver el instante antes de aferrarte? Can you see the instant before you grasp?
Recall a recent craving: was there a moment between wanting and acting?
Which of your “agents” argue when you have to decide something hard?
Which habit of yours seems to have a life of its own, as if someone else were driving it?
- Si la libertad no es hacer lo que quieres, ¿qué es para ti?If freedom is not doing what you want, what is it for you?
How does your person, which exists, differ from the self you cling to?
