EnacciónEnaction
Caps. 7 – 8Chs. 7 – 8
Neither is the world given in advance nor does the mind invent it: they arise together in action.
Seeing is not copying the world. It is bringing forth a world with a body that moves.
Why is it so unsettling to doubt that the world has given properties? Following Richard Bernstein, the authors call it the Cartesian anxiety: either knowledge has a fixed foundation, or everything falls into chaos. Kant painted it as an island of truth surrounded by a stormy ocean of illusion.
The Madhyamaka school, the “middle way”, sees the same gesture in both searches: clinging to a foundation, whether outside, in a given world, or inside, in the mind. To leave that oscillation they propose a word: enaction, enacting, bringing forth.
The “chicken position” says the world has prior properties and the cognitive system recovers them. The “egg position”, that the system projects its own world. Both rely on representation: one to recover what is outside, the other to project what is inside. The way out: world and perceiver specify each other.
The starting point is no longer how an independent world is recovered, but how a perceiver guides action in a situation that their own activity keeps changing. Merleau-Ponty had seen it: the organism is a keyboard that moves itself and offers its keys to the monotonous hammering from outside.
The authors drop a ring of cellular automata into a random soup of 0s and 1s: whatever touches a cell replaces its state. Without being programmed to, one ring becomes an “odd sequence recognizer”. With its closure and coupling, it selects from randomness what is relevant to it: its world.
A ring with its own dynamics in a soup of 0s and 1s. What reaches it changes it, but what counts as a signal depends on the ring.
Los gatitos del carritoThe kittens in the carriage
Held and Hein raised kittens in the dark. In the light, some walked pulling a carriage in which others rode, still: the same visual experience. Once released, the passive ones bumped into things and fell off edges as if blind. Seeing is not extracting features: it is guiding action.
Ver con la pielSeeing with the skin
Paul Bach-y-Rita connected a camera to vibrators on the skin of blind people. If the person aims the camera with head or hand, within a few hours they stop feeling tingles and start perceiving objects in the space they explore. If they do not move, nothing appears.
El color no está ahí afueraColor is not out there
There is no one-to-one match between the light a surface reflects and the color we see. Pigeons, being tetrachromats, live in a color space incommensurable with ours. And Rosch showed that the Dani, with only two color words, remember focal colors better: color is neither arbitrary nor given.

Morin states the same loop: the world is in our mind, which is in the world. For him all knowledge is translation and reconstruction, never reflection. The brain does not receive the world: it computes it from stimuli that it itself transforms.
The nuance lies in the word “representation”. Morin keeps it, understood as a construction of the brain. Varela, Thompson and Rosch prefer to drop it in its strong sense, because it drags along the idea of a prior world to be copied. Both reject the mirror.
No es idealismoIt is not idealism
That color is not “out there” does not mean it is “in here”. Color categories belong to a shared biological and cultural world, and they have universals: Berlin and Kay found at most eleven basic categories across more than ninety languages.
No niega todo representarIt does not deny all representing
A map represents a territory, and that is no problem. What is questioned is representation in the strong sense: a world with given properties, plus inner representations that recover it, plus a separate subject who does all that.
No es solo «la mente en el cuerpo»It is not just “mind in the body”
«Acción» dice que percibir y moverse son inseparables y evolucionaron juntos.“Embodied” says two things: that cognition depends on having a body with sensorimotor capacities, and that those capacities are embedded in a biological, psychological and cultural context. “Action” says that perceiving and moving are inseparable and evolved together.
The enactive approach consists of two points: (1) perception consists in perceptually guided action and (2) cognitive structures emerge from the recurrent sensorimotor patterns that enable action to be perceptually guided.Varela, Thompson y Rosch · The Embodied Mind, cap. 8, p. 173Varela, Thompson & Rosch · The Embodied Mind, ch. 8, p. 173
It is the definition of the term the book made famous. It comes after the study of color, which the authors treat as a microcosm of cognitive science: neuroscience, psychology, linguistics and anthropology agree that color is neither outside nor inside.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
¿Qué queda de la objetividad? What is left of objectivity?
Realists accuse enaction of disguised idealism: if the world is not given, what makes science true? And enactivists themselves are divided: some, like Hutto and Myin, want to eliminate all representation; others think that leaves abstract thought unexplained.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Ver es una manera de actuarSeeing is a way of acting
Kevin O'Regan and Alva Noë proposed in 2001 that seeing is mastering sensorimotor contingencies: knowing how what we see changes when we move. Robotics that learns by exploring with a body, and predictive theories of mind, argue with this book today, for or against it.
¿Qué mundo haces aparecer cuando te mueves? What world do you bring forth when you move?
Touch an object with your eyes closed: do you recognize it still, or by moving your hand?
Which things in your home exist for you because of what you do with them?
- Si un pájaro ve con cuatro colores primarios, ¿quién ve «el mundo real», el pájaro o tú?If a bird sees with four primary colors, who sees “the real world”, the bird or you?
What do you know how to do that you could not explain with rules?
When does it unsettle you that the world has no firm ground? What do you do with that unease?

If the world arises with its perceiver, evolution cannot be optimal fit to a given world. Next: natural drift.
